Eating a balanced diet
No single food is healthy on its own - it is the overall balance of food you eat that is important. When eating a balanced diet no food is forbidden - it is variety that is the key. Eating healthily is not about giving up your favourite foods - it is about eating the right amounts of the right kind of foods in order to enjoy good health.
Eating a healthy balanced diet, and undertaking regular enjoyable physical activity, will help you to maintain a healthy weight, and may also contribute to the prevention of serious illnesses such as cancer and heart disease later in life.
A healthy diet involves a balanced mixture of a wide variety of foods:
- Lots of fruit & vegetables
- Plenty of foods rich in starch and fibre
- Moderate quantities of milk and dairy foods
- Moderate amounts of meat, fish or meat-alternatives
- Small amounts of foods which are high in fat
- Small amounts of foods which contain added sugar
- Small amounts of food containing salt
- A word about alcohol
