Fibre foods

Plenty of foods rich in starch and fibre

This group includes foods such as potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, breakfast cereals and pulses (e.g. beans, peas, lentils).

Foods from this group should form the main part of most of your meals. They are the main providers of starch and fibre in our diets, and are essential energy providers.

The wholegrain varieties of these foods are particularly rich in fibre (which helps to prevent constipation), contain more vitamins and minerals, and are more filling. Therefore, if you want to be even healthier, choose wholemeal bread, brown rice, wholegrain pasta and wholegrain breakfast cereals.

A word of warning

Remember, the addition of fat means the addition of calories, so watch how you prepare starchy and fibre foods before you eat them...

  • 170g of boiled potatoes provide about 120 calories. 170g of chips, on the other hand, provide 430 calories!
  • Two slices of toast contain about 165 calories. Add butter and that shoots up to over 300 calories!
