Weight loss tips

Slimming has become big business and a lot of people are making a lot of money from peoples' desire to lose weight.

However, the truth is that despite the expensive products, the so-called 'miracle' pills, the fad diets, and the far-fetched weight loss claims, actually there is no miracle way to lose weight.

If you want to lose weight safely, and keep the weight off, you need to make small, sustainable, permanent adjustments to what you eat and how much physical activity you do.

If you are concerned about your weight, go to see your doctor or dietician. However, if you just want to lose a bit of weight, try following the advice below:

  • Get some support from family and friends. Maybe one of them may decide to join you in your challenge.
  • Set yourself realistic goals. Aim for slow and steady weight loss - about 0.5 - 1 kilogram (1-2 pounds) a week. This may seem slow, but think how it adds up over a few months.
  • Don't "crash diet" and make sure you eat a balanced diet to get all the energy, nutrients and vitamins your body needs.
  • Cut down your intake of fat, sugar, alcohol and salt - instead, eat more starchy foods (for example, potatoes, pasta, rice, bread), fresh fruit, and vegetables.
  • Take part in regular, enjoyable physical activity.

Look at eating a balanced diet for information about healthy eating. Also, visit the fit for anything section for information on getting active. Simple changes such as going out for a walk at lunchtime, or taking the stairs instead of the lift will help you to burn off excess energy, and get fitter.
